problem with my car...hoping its just a clutch...

I was just driving along, hardly gave the car any gas and I heard what I thought might have been a very faint popping noise and then no power and the trans acts as if I have the clutch pedal in all the time even though I dont.

My clutch has been making a lot of squealing noises lately, but the last time I had this happen it was during WOT in 3rd or 4th (i forget) and it was right after a shift when my input shaft broke. I havent really banged on it hard since it was replaced and considering I only lightly applied throttle in cruising gear im hoping its the clutch.

Anyone have any ideas? I got smacked with a bad tow bill and I'm really hoping its not going to get worse.

    That the new clutch?

I had a 2.2 Dodge years ago, one day one of the springs popped out of the clutch disk and wedged in the pressure plate holding it back. Was like there was no clutch at all.

    dunno beyond that.

I havent put a new clutch in. Right now I have an aftermarket with about 40k miles on it.

Noticed a chirping sound (not coming from the tires) starting in september when i would down shift as I let the clutch pedal back out. The chirping/squealing sound has been happening on more and more occasions as the months progressed so I'm hoping that its just a clutch module that finally went the way of hte ghost.

Its an expensive fix for the srt4's but im sure its still cheaper than tearing down a transmission to replace an input shaft.

    EDIT -

When you say no clutch at all, you mean you couldnt get it to go into any gear, or it acted like you had the clutch pushed in all the time? There was a "ping" or a "pop" sound and thats when all of this started happening, so im curious if it happened to me too.

I've heard "chirping" associated with throw out bearings a lot. For a while, the TO bearing that Spec was shipping (at least with 2.3 kits) where crap. and there where all kind of reports of chirping. If you couldnt release the clutch, I would say the TO bearing came appart.

Yes, when that happend to mine, it was like you had the clutch pedal depressed. It would go into gears fine, but just would not move at all. Basically the sprinf was in the plate holiding it in a position just like if the pedal was pushed (off the clutch disc). That was way to long ago to remeber if there where noises associated with it ;)

Actually, maybe the TO bearing did come appart and chunks of it are in between the pressure plate. Of course if those things break input shaft, that still a possiblilty.
