1/4 mile in my experience: Stick = quicker, Automatic (Either manual or just leave it in drive) = more consistant. Everybody blows a shift once in a while with a stick. If you don't your not pushing it hard enough. It just sucks when you F the shift up in the 3rd or 4th round. :veryhappy:

You will need a stall converter. The best thing to do is talk to the converter builder and tell him about the car and get one custom made. I don't know enough about twin disc clutches to say anything about them.

It all comes down to what your preferences are and what you plan on doing with the car. I had the same decision to make with the cobra, yes auto is more reliable, faster and can trans brake it, but in the end I could not put the th400 in the cobra. Build the car the way you want it and the way you think ull enjoy it the most!

I spent almost 3 months swapping the auto out of my old GT and putting in a 5spd. Pain in the ass, but thats HOW BAD i wanted a stick. Eventually ditched it for a 5spd Mach 1

Been having this argument with myself over the past couple of months... I'm in the process of building a 33 Ford Truck thats being built with intentions of being a street/strip vehicle (in that order). To me, 100 times out of 100 I would prefer a stick over in auto if it was in a "toy", but the durability and consistency of an auto is hard to beat. After initially thinking stick I changed my mind to a built auto.... However, about a week ago I'm back to the 4-speed and sticking to it! I know I would be disappointed if I went with anything else...

Wow, even though this is posted in the drag racing section its still a tough call for me. An auto is going to be extremely consistent so you can dial in better, but a stick is more fun when you're "racing against yourself" to improve your times or technique.
If you had posted this in the general section, I would have said auto if you have to deal with rush hour traffic on the Schuylkill parking lot...erm... expressway and a stick otherwise. Sure its annoying that an auto comes with a vagina, but when you're in gridlock which would you rather hit over and over: a vagina or a clutch pedal? :biglaugh:

If I had a built auto with a manual valve body it would be fun to mess around in if it were a high power car. But for a stock daily I'd rather have a 5 speed because I can grab gears just for fun and not try to be the fastest thing around.
