View Full Version : Productive test and tune

So i've been sneaking up on the tune with the new EMS system. Big learning curve but I feel pretty comfortable with it now. Last time out, I soft launched the car and soft shifted all the gears just ot get the AFR tuned. I felt pretty comfortable with it and did some off line clean up.
1st pass tonight was a full launch, full RPM shifts, and ran it to the stripe to log AFR's. The good news is that the AFR's where flat 11.5 to 11.6 the whole way through all of the gears :D
60' - 1.78
330' - 5.35
1/8th - 8.36 at 82.89
1000' - 10.91
1/4 - 13.11 at 98.86
Not very impressive considering 26 psi boost, full pull pass. Of course the good news was the AFR was GREAT and the timing is still VERY conservative.
So I punched in 2* more timing. The car liked that :D
60' - 1.62
330' - 5.05
1/8th - 7.91 at 86.97
1000' - 10.38
1/4 - 12.46 at 111.77
Yeah, a whole pile of ET and MPH for two little degrees of timing ;)
So it likes timing, lets give it one more ...
60' - 1.61
330' - 5.11
1/8th - 7.95 at 87.57
1000' - 10.40
1/4 - 12.46 at 113.01
Interesting, it picked up MPH but the ET was the same. I felt something a bit odd in 2nd gear and indeed the data log backed that up. Right after the 1-2 shift the car went REALLY fat. Looking into it, it dinked the rev limiter with me slow shifting it tonight and the spark cut let it dump fuel on it.
Left it alone for the next pass and went ...
60' 1.61
330' - 4.97
1/8th - 7.76 at 88.70
1000' 10.17
1/4 - 12.22 at 113.69
Still a way to go to get back to where I was, but it was REALLY productive tonight and it's starting to show promise. I really need to get this thing on a dyno to tune the timing, but it's still conservative enough to be punch some in there and watching the MPH.

I am pretty sure for a test and tune you made the biggest gains that night so congrats

Thanks Guys :awsome:
Man do I love data logs ... Here is a snap from the 12.20 pass ... seems I'm a slacker and blipped the throttle on the 2-3 shift ...

Once you use datalogging, you wonder how you ever tuned without it...

Nice work on the tuning there!

x2 on both counts.

I've sort of always had some kind of data logging, even with the EEC stuff I was using Innovate's SSI-4 to capture what I needed. What is so nice now is that EVERY input / Output from the EMS is in the logs and they can be graphed / manipulated as needed to try to understand what is going on. It's almost information overload, but usefull at the same time.
Nice work on the tuning there!
Thanks! This system actually makes me look better than I am ;) The Tuner Studio Software is just amazing. If I had to do it over again, I'm sure I could have the drive VE table tuned in two days. It effectively took one good track day to get the under boost VE stuff sorted then a little offline. If I would have done that on a dyno it likely would have taken 3 pulls to get it good, and one to verify.
The timing REALLY needs to be finalized on a dyno, but it's getting there.

So I went to the track last night for the night at the races deal (along with pro mod cars). The timing thing has been bugging me wondering what one more would do. So I put one more degree in the top cells under boost and had at it.
60' 1.62(8)
330' - 4.96
1/8th - 7.74 at 89.16
1000' 10.16
1/4 - 12.20 at 114.18
Although it did pick up a little here, the extra degree probably isnt the reason. It hit the tires just a bit more than typical and that likely explains the slightly higher MPH.
Adjusted tires and went back for 2nd TT
60' 1.61
330' - 4.96
1/8th - 7.74 at 89.14
1000' 10.15
1/4 - 12.19 at 113.98
So although there is a little pick-up with the additional degree, it's starting to push MET so I will likely take that back out for now.
I missed a shift in the first round, but the incriments to that point was right on par with the time trials. At a minimum, I found some consistancy :D

Reading through this it seems that system works pretty well, I watched the times go from 13.1 down to 12.1, Nice! Not too far from where you were before if I'm correct?
Awesome man, glad to see things working out with that 4 banger :woot1:

In the same leuge, just short a bit. I could get there with boost now, but this is all about getting the tune right. To this point, this thing has never been this consistant.

FINALLY you come around :pepper:

Good to hear Bob!
And I read that BS in that NMRA thread.....get it together and bring home that TS 12 second class prize, no brackets, you can do that any week :)

LOL, well the sad part is, I had the combo to do just that before I started this EMS swap. It would tick off a high 11, and lots of 12.0X's. I really debated on leaving it alone at that point just for this race, but the combo must progress.
I just don't see it running on that 12.00 index without maybe ~ 2 psi more boost and I've not been there yet with this tune. Add in, it's usually pretty freaking hot there and it's not likely to happen. I might enter TS for Saturday to go through the experience and then just run BIII Sunday. We will see what TnT Friday brings.

Nice job Bob!
Maybe we can race someday if you stick with that very first tune haha! (maybe pull another degree or 2 for me)

Was just reading through this, definatly impressive and a nice car. I do believe I raced you either first or second round tho? Can't quite remember. (yellow vert) and how much did that blower setup cost you by the way? been pricing things out for my car. Driving me nuts not being able to get outa the mid 13's I guess its not awful for an all engine stang with basic upgrades but im lookin for those high mph trap times next year.

You must have me confused with someone else. I ran with the slick cars Thursday, and didn't race a vert that I remember. Also no blower on my car, it's just a lowly 4 cylinder with a little turbo.

lol ya i def do, no idea why i was thinkin that but your times were exactly identical to the ones on my slip. and the next run of that car. My bad tho. and nothin against 4cyls lol after watchin them civics run 11's lookin like they are ready to fall apart >.>

Car im thinking of was a white 09 gt in the street car section, ran a 13.1 vs me in the first round then i believe a 12.2 the next round. As you can see its been a long day... haha
